Valley of Flowers some call it a fairy land, others land of deities. But ultimately it is the Valley Of Flowers – the holy hidden residence of flowers – myriad flowers. The Valley of Flowers National Park is the second core zone of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. Nestling in the west Himalayan region, it covers a vast expanse of 87.50 sq kms with 300 varieties of alpine flowers. Valley of Flowers is situated in Bhyundar Valley at an elevation of 3,658 meters above sea level. It is located in Chamoli Garhwal. The stunning landscape, bordered by Nepal and Tibet, comes to life with the monsoon rains. The surface appears as a bright carpet of colours against a mountainous snow-capped background. Route to the Valley of Flowers is rich with cascading waterfalls. Valley of Flowers is itself rich in exuberant biodiversity. Valley of Flowers was declared as the national park of India in the year 1982 and it is now a world heritage site.
The flowers of the valley bloom in summer from June to October. It's the only time when the national park is open to the public since during the rest of the calendar the valley sleeps under the serenity and tranquillity of the snow. It is a much sought after haunt for florists, botanists and of course trekkers. The trekkers trek to the Valley of Flowers covering about 17 km. The nearest town is Joshimath in Garhwal. The transportation is well-managed from Haridwar and Dehradun. Even from Delhi one can board a train to Haridwar and then travel by bus to Govindghat via Rishikesh. Govindghat is near Joshimath and one can begin ones trek from here. Starting from Govindghat, after a trek of about 14 kms, trekkers reach Ghangaria which is a small and probably the last settlement, located about 3 km from the Valley of Flowers. Further on the way, the trekker explores many Sikh pilgrims and is heartily welcomed by the expanses of the wild flowers armoured in its sceptical beauty. The valley starts near a gorge over Pushpawati River. Access to the Valley of Flowers is restricted to sunrays timings and camping is prohibited. The entire fee is Rs. 600 for foreigners and Rs. 150 for Indians for a three day pass. Each extra day has additional charges. The Valley of Flowers requires strenuous hike but you will fell on the zenith of a magical land. It's recommended to pack plenty of clothing and some eatables. After exploring the valley the trekkers have to return back to Ghangaria on the same day. After a nights rest you can huff and puff back to Govindghat and remember your difficult uphill trek. But surely one would be sad enough to leave behind such a heavenly place. The trip back will be uneventful and eventually the life of the plains will appear crowded and pointless. But deep down you will always remember a charming and mesmerising place called The Valley of Flowers.
